Geography’s fundamental role lies in helping children to understand the world, its environments and places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. Geography enables children to become engaged citizens, concerned with the future of our planet by sparking children’s curiosity about the world around them and the people and places that it is made up of. It encourages an appreciation of how the world works and of the connections between concepts such as, community, cultural diversity, interdependence and sustainability.
Through Geography lessons, children will develop their knowledge and interest of diverse places from across the world and have the opportunity to compare their differing natural geography, human environments and available resources. As they progress, children should develop enquiry skills and be able to raise and answer questions about the natural and human world, make links to other curriculum areas and think critically about the impact that human activity can have on them.
